The Official Opening of our new Derby Sands Butterfly Memorial, April 10th 2016Our Derby Sands “Always Loved Never Forgotten” baby memorial garden opened on June 29th 2014. At that time, the central feature of the garden, a beautiful cocoon shaped memorial displayed the names of 155 local babies who had died during pregnancy, at birth or in the hours, days, weeks or months after birth.Since the opening, Lou Evans, the memorial co-ordinator has received many requests for names to be added to our memorial and at Christmas 2015, there were approximately 300 baby names, dating back to 1942.The garden has been visited by countless individuals and families, providing a beautiful haven for people to reflect on their loss and remember their baby / babies. Derby Sands has received amazing feedback from visitors to the garden and requests continue to come in for names to be added. At the start of 2015, Kirsty Wiser (Chair of Derby Sands) and Lou discussed the fact that the cocoon memorial was becoming rather full and a second memorial was needed, due to the number of requests coming in. So once again, Derby Sands started fundraising and the donations came in from so many generous individuals, families and community groups. It made perfect sense to invite Rachel Carter to work on the new memorial, as she had designed and created our garden and our original cocoon sculpture. So in spring 2015, Rachel was commissioned to design and fabricate a second memorial sculpture. And so, our beautiful Butterfly was created. The stainless steel framework was provided by HTF Stainless Steel Fabrication Limited and this was then moved to Trowell Garden Centre at the start of 2016 where Rachel worked on the sculpture over several months.Picture Gallery here.
